Carpenter Hans Diderich Schmilau has for some years been
employed by carpenter John Friderich Granberg , where he the
past year has been responsible for Anne Marie Granbergs match
production.
In 1843 , he applies himself to be allowed to establish his own
factory for producing matches and wooden pencils.
He got his appropriation the
9th of
January 1844 to operate factory in Borgergade 179 after he a
while had made a living as a tavern owner.
Anne Marie Granberg was not among those who recommended
Schmilaus citizenship and authorization, as they probably
quarreled with each other, perhaps because of the pencil
production , which is a close competitor to the city's leading
pencil manufacturer , Anne Marie 's brother, carpenter Peter
Frost.
Schmilau is, as his landlord writes, living extremely poor
with his family, why he finds it difficult to pay the fee for
the grant , but at the end he pays for it.
The last time Schmilau is registered in the industrial
registration is in 1846 , where he has 1 adult , 4 kids and a
wife employed , which together produce 8 gros per day,
equivalent to approx. 360,000
pcs annually.
It can not be seen when Schmilau shut down the production , but
after several unsuccessful attempts he got a citizenship
as second-hand dealer in 1859.
