Gothersgade 4
Benjamin
Hellmann,
was the first in
Denmark to apply for permission to
establish a friction
match stick
factory in Denmark
the 22nd
of November 1837.
Initially got
Hellmann refused
because the factory
inspector, who was
responsible for the approvals of the
new factories
thought that this was
too dangerous a production.
Hellmann searched
again in 1838,
this time for company
B. Hellmann
& son,
stating that
he intended toplace the factory on the
island of Amager. On 23
April 1839
Hellmann got a royal
license to operate a
friction match
stick factory, as he
can get
the authorization when
he has given and
received approval for
the exact address.
Hellmann never went
back and the factory
was not established.
