ANDREAS HASSING OG JACOB CHR. SMITH
1844 - 1846
Nytorv 476, Aalborg
Andreas Hassing (1798 - ??)
Jacob Christian Smith (1811 - 1876)
In early 1844 , the merchant Andreas Hassing and jeweler Jacob
Christian Smith teamed up and are starting to produce friction
match sticks where Smidt with its precision engineering
ingenuity has designed engines including
to fabricate round
sticks .
That same year, Ole Christian Green has applied to patent a
similar fabrication (perhaps to put a stick in the wheel of the
new competitor ), so they send a similar application to Aalborg
Magistrate, who forwards it to the Royal Danish Council
which is
the supreme authority in the field.
The case is pending for almost 2 years when both parties are
asked to send in drawings and descriptions of the machines ,
which Hassing and Smith finds too difficult , but the case ends
with the Solomonic solution that none of the parties are granted
exclusive rights to their patent and their
round sticks .
Probably fight corroded so much on them that they stop their
factory and instead devote themselves to their grocery store and
goldsmith business.
Hassing og Smidts advertisement for their newly started factory.
Smith spelled his name wtih a th and not, as here with a dt.
