1866 - 1887
Vestergade 84, Odense
Grocer Carl Meyling who had his retail sales in Vestergade 84 ,
could in June 1866 announce that he had bought Adolph Madsen´s ,
former Brummer´s , match stick factory in Vestergade 86. The
factory
was lying in the side building in Vestergade 86 , where it had
always been in Brummer's farm , but as an annexe in 84 was
adjacent to the neighboring building in 86 , it took only a few
holes in the common wall to provide access from the
new address.
In the beginning, Carl Meyling had his office and warehouse at
the same address , but the following year he moved these
to Kongensgade 17 and in 1874 he moved again, this time for
Klaragade 1 , where he shared an office with his two grocery
colleagues , Hjorth and Thomsen.
After the match law was adopted Meyling had to rebuild his
plant and the new factory he built in the annexe in Vestergade
84 and the lease with Brummer was terminated .
In order to raise capital for the rebuilding of the factory
Meyling went in partnership with his two colleagues, and he
renamed the name of the factory to Odense Tændstikfabrik .
During 1875 , production increased and Meyling announced
continuously women , boys and girls to his factory .
Whether Meyling exported is not known , but at a time in 1875 he
announced also by a man who could fabricate the zinc boxes that
were used for export .
Meyling who also had thrown himself into the liquor trade
bussiness from his address in Klaregade , choosed for reasons
unknown to shut down Odense Tændstikfabrik at the 30th of
March 1887.
Meylings trading business continued and after his death was
taken over by his wife, Florentine.
