Nyhavn 31, the backyard 2. floor
In 1865 Jonkoping Tändstickfabrik contacted the wholesaler
company HG
Worm & Co in Nyhavn 31 in order to establish a cooperation .
Already the same year he bought 465,000 boxes of matches and
sales rose sharply and was in 1872 over 1 million boxes . And
this in
spite of the competition from Godthaab and Swedish factories in
Nordköping and Örebro who sold their matches 1 krone cheaper per
.
mille (1000 boxes ) .
In 1875, Worms sales from Jönköping had risen to 9.7 million
boxes, much of which was exported to North and South America.
The same year, his sister, Severine
Augusta Worm was selling Jonkoping matches in Aalborg .
Jönköping was nervous about being so dependent on a single
wholesaler and its export to third countries , so in the summer
of 1876 they signed an agreement with Worm not to offer
Jönköping sticks for export but instead refer the export orders
directly to Jönköping.
With this agreement Worms sales declined to 1.1 million in 1877
and 350,000 in 1881.
Sales rose again to 730,000 in 1887 , but
fell back the year after to be between 100 to 200,000 boxes
annually.
In a letter to Worm in 1876 Jönköping indicated their views on
the Danish market : " After what we've been able to find out
whether the Danish matchstick production , it is very small and
unless the Danish matchstick producers preparation methods are
undergoing a complete overhaul and change,
there will not be any significant
competition from Danish side. "
But the changes in the Danish market came
in 1898, when Gosch bought Godthaab and then the quality of the
Danish matches increased radically .
We do not know how what happened to H. G.
Worm and his sister, but Hans Georg Worm
died in 1905.
There appeares no labels of the Worm & Co's brand, but he sold
only sticks from Jönköping with their original label .
